About this class

This is an English language course for speakers of other languages (ESOL) and aims to improve confidence and development of functional language skills in speaking about health and wellbeing to support learners in being able to access appropriate health care provision. Open to any learner from Pre-entry to Entry 3 level, learners will learn the vocabulary for and talk about health problems and medicines to a doctor or nurse. Learners may also learn how to access local health services, call for help and find their way around a hospital or health centre. As well as learning the core vocabulary reading, writing, and speaking and listening skills, by working independently and in small groups with your tutor, you will also develop wider skills such as: ● Problem solving ● Team working ● Communication skills ● Study skills. ● Navigating internet for NHS Choices to find GPs and dentists and descriptions of ailments. How you will be taught, and your understanding checked: Your tutor will work with you to understand what your level of knowledge is before you start to ensure that you are working at the right level for your needs. They will agree a learning plan for you to work towards. The course will be a mixture of whole class teaching, independent activity and small group/pair work, all supported by your tutor. Your tutor will talk to you about your progress, and you will give you feedback to help you to continue to develop your skills and knowledge.
